Fontaine Bartholdi |
Installed on the Place des Terreaux (first at one end of the square then moved to the center in 1992), the fountain was completed in 1888. It represents France (Marianne) and the 4 rivers (the horses). Originally commissioned by the city of Bordeaux, it represented the "triumphal tank of the Garonne". The city of Bordeaux having found it too expensive, it was the city of Lyon which acquired it when it was presented at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Installed in Place des Terreaux in 1891, it was moved in 1992 and classified as a Historic Monument. September 29, 1995. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) also created the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Lion of Belfort. |
